Ph.D. in Classical Studies, Licensed Professional Counselor Associate Supervised by Murphy Foster, LPC Supervisor
I’m Evan Rap, and I’m here to help you get more of what you want out of your life. Many of us experience challenges despite our successes in other areas of life. If you’ve exhausted your options for overcoming these obstacles on your own, it’s time to explore new perspectives. Together, we can uncover the root causes of persistent patterns and develop strategies to create a life you love. I look forward to partnering with you on your path to growth and well-being.
My Services:
- Individual Therapy: I work with adult individuals facing unique challenges at any stage of life. If you want to make a change in your life, I’m committed to working alongside you.
- Men’s Support: Let’s face it: it’s a confusing time to figure out what it means to be a man in our society. I help men work through and find strength in the unique challenges and opportunities they face. I work with my male clients to find the power in putting their experience into words so that they can be better understood by those around them.
- Couple’s Therapy: Many couples find themselves repeating cycles of stressful conflict—without ever having chosen to get there and with no satisfying resolution. I support both members in a couple to be understood by their partner, work through conflict productively, and have more room for satisfying, intimate connection.
- Group Psychotherapy: Humans are relational beings, so many of our problems show up in our relationships. Group therapy is therefore one of the most effective formats for working on your concerns. In a confidential setting, group members support and challenge each other to explore their behavior patterns and to move towards developing satisfying relationships.
Whether you’re seeking to:
- Build self-confidence and self-worth
- Have happier and more satisfying relationships at home and at work
- Manage anger effectively
- Have more insulation when interacting with difficult people and situations
- Navigate living as a rational being in a chaotic world
- Break free from addiction and thrive in recovery
- Heal from grief and loss
- Find purpose and meaning in life
My approach:
I have had the privilege of living a life immersed in learning, and I bring all of that knowledge and experience to my work as a therapist. I draw from a broad variety of sources, from Greek and Roman philosophy to traditional psychoanalysis to Buddhist psychology. All of those traditions point to one common idea: that you, with the help of a wise friend, already have the power to solve your own problems by looking inside of yourself. You don’t need to follow a cookie cutter plan, just learn to listen to your own intuition.
While at work in my therapy office, I consider my main role to be helping my clients see things as they really are—how they really feel, what they really need, what they really value. It’s only through being able to come to terms with our world that we can start to go after what we want (and be able to tell others so we can get some help along the way).
I don’t aim at quick fixes or temporary patches; my psychodynamic approach may not always move quickly, but the payoff is lasting, transformational change in my clients’ lives. Together, we will form a team dedicated to exploring your internal landscape. Through understanding your patterns and motivations, you will be empowered to make changes and live a more satisfying life. All you need to do is show up every week and talk about how you’re really doing.
A note on group therapy: Humans are relational beings, so many of our problems show up in our relationships. Group therapy can therefore be one of the most effective formats for working on your concerns. In a confidential setting, group members support and challenge each other to explore their behavior patterns and to move towards developing satisfying relationships.
Additional Information:
Finding the “right” therapist for you and your situation can feel overwhelming. However, this is an important step toward supporting you, your child, and your family system in the therapeutic process. My hope is that you can learn more about me, as a human and as a therapist, to determine if we are the right fit.
Working as a therapist is a second career for me, and so I bring quite a bit of life experience to my practice:
- I grew up in Tempe, Arizona and stayed nearby to complete my undergraduate studies at Arizona State University.
- I moved to Texas in 2010 to earn a PhD in Classics at the University of Texas at Austin, where I studied Roman archaeology. While there, I also taught Latin and a large lecture course for undergraduates. My main area of interest was Roman urbanism, and my dissertation was on architectural planning and design at Ostia Antica in central Italy.
- My archaeology field experience comes from digs at Ostia Antica and Horvat Omrit, a Roman-era temple complex in northern Israel.
- Following graduate school (the first time), I spent five years teaching 8th through 12th graders in Latin, English, and archaeology at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin.
- At some point over the last fifteen years, I learned that what I really love is supporting other people. After benefitting so much from my own therapy and participating in a therapy group, I decided that I would bring more good to more people if I shifted from teaching to therapy. I therefore returned to grad school to earn an MA in Professional Counseling at Texas State University.
- In my (second) graduate training, I worked at an intensive outpatient addiction treatment center, and I am a strong advocate for the transformative power of twelve-step and other recovery programs.
- Some of my interests that I explore in my free time are: baseball, hot yoga, hand tool woodworking, and Buddhism.
My rate is $150 for 50-minute individual sessions, $225 for 75-minute initial consultations or extended sessions, $80 for group therapy sessions, Texas Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (#96050). Click here to request an appointment.

Self-awareness is a supreme gift, a treasure as precious as life. This is what makes us human. -- Irvin Yalom
