Snow Day Sanctuary

It seems like you can’t turn on a radio or TV for more than a few minutes without hearing about the winter weather situation hitting the country, Dallas included. As I was walking out of the office last night a man said he was headed home to tell his son he thought it would be best for him to drive back to college in OK today rather than waiting until late Sunday. On Wednesday this week someone called to ask if we would be meeting on Monday – yes Monday. The anticipation of seeing a wintery weather event apparently is making people a bit anxious. But fret not, friends! Instead of battling cabin fever, let’s explore ways to transform this snowbound,or icebound, time into a haven of self-care and rejuvenation.

1. Nurture Your Inner Architect: Unleash your inner builder with a fort-making extravaganza! Grab blankets, pillows, chairs, and even fairy lights to craft a wintery sanctuary in your living room. Cuddle up with a good book or a heartwarming movie inside your creation, feeling like a child rediscovering the magic of imagination.

2. Culinary Creativity Takes Flight: Channel your inner Julia Child and whip up a delectable feast from pantry staples. Dust off those cookbooks, experiment with new recipes, or bake warm, comforting treats that fill the house with delicious aromas. Share your creations with family, or savor them solo while enjoying the snowfall through the window.

3. Rekindle the Artist Within: Let your artistic spirit flourish! Dig out those dusty art supplies, grab a blank canvas, or simply doodle in a notebook. Capture the winter landscape through watercolors, crayons, or a pencil sketch. You can also simply let your hand flow, expressing emotions on paper, free flow.

4. Embrace the Power of Play: Remember the joy of board games, puzzles, and card games? Gather your loved ones, friends, or neighbors for a night of friendly competition or solo contemplation. Dust off a classic, try a new game, or simply lose yourselves in the world of make-believe and shared laughter.

5. Recharge with Mindful Moments: Snow days are an invitation to slow down and reconnect with ourselves. Curl up with a guided meditation, practice calming yoga poses, or simply journal your thoughts and feelings. Let the silence and stillness become a space for inner exploration and deep relaxation.

6. Reach Out and Connect: Even isolated in our homes, we’re still a part of a community. Use this time to reconnect with loved ones through video calls, send heartfelt messages, or even surprise a neighbor with a handwritten note. The warmth of human connection can melt away any winter chill.

Remember, snow days are an opportunity to embrace the pause, to nurture ourselves, and to rediscover the simple joys that lie within the four walls of our home. So, grab a mug of hot cocoa, settle into your cozy nest, and let the magic of the storm work its wonders.
