Ready for a Reset?

This is the typical time of year when many of us set New Year’s resolutions, reflecting on what worked for us during the preceding 12 months—and what we’d like to change. But 2020 was anything but typical. As a society, we have been through so much this year. On a moment’s notice, we learned how to reorganize, reprioritize, and regroup. While we have also realized that we have very little control over many worldly events, we do have choices in how we respond to them. There’s something about the promise of 2021 that calls for more than a resolution or two; we’re ready for a reset.

If you’ve been considering changes in your personal life and health, what better time than now to put thoughts into action? Here are some tips for resetting your mental, physical, and spiritual health:

Mental

  • Reach out to friends if/when you’re feeling down. Create a buddy system so that no one is struggling with depression without trusted loved ones checking in with them.
  • Limit your exposure to social media and too much news. It’s just … too much.
  • Plan a weekly movie or TV night with your bubble people – nothing but comedies!
  • Exercise daily if possible, preferably outdoors.
  • Consult a therapist if you are having a difficult time staying optimistic.
  • Try journaling your thoughts and feelings.

Physical

  • Eat as healthfully as possible. There is a direct correlation between getting proper nutrition and optimal physical and mental health. (For more on this, see our last newsletter)
  • Limit caffeine – a little is generally fine; too much can lead to a racing heart, headaches, and feelings of anxiety.
  • Set goals for physical exercise; if you’re just starting out, plan for 15 minutes of walking daily and work up from there.

Spiritual

  • Do something you love, every single day. Whether it’s gardening, painting, writing, cooking, dancing, listening to music, spending time with family and/or pets, give yourself something enjoyable to anticipate.
  • Try meditating, praying, or deep breathing exercises. There are some wonderful, free apps that will guide you. You can start with just five minutes daily and still notice a positive difference in yourself.

While most of us are more than ready to say goodbye to 2020, don’t let an all-or-nothing attitude about 2021 get in your way. Small, subtle changes—when practiced consistently—can lead to significant improvements in your overall life. Happy New Year from Insights!
